The fundamentals of paediatric nursing is a core course in the Bachelor of Nursing Science program. It is a 5 credit unit course with theory and clinical component. This course is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to deliver effective nursing care to well and sick infants, children and adolescents. It enables learners to apply biomedical science and foundational nursing concepts and theories to promote health, prevent disease and manage common childhood health problems in outpatient and in-patient settings. Review of normal growth and development, and anatomy and physiology of children will prepare students to undertake comprehensive physical assessments of the infant, child, and adolescent. The course will also cover special child care strategies including the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) and Emergency Triage and Treatment of critically ill children (ETAT). The use of learner-centered approaches and appropriate information and communication technologies is emphasized.
